#RhodeScholar Michelle recaps #UHCTC!

Sunday’s weather forecast called for “breezy” conditions. That was the understatement of the year.

I could hear the wind howling as soon as I woke up, and I knew it was going to make for an interesting morning.

Luckily it wasn’t a cold wind - temps were in the 50s. Not hot, but certainly warm enough. But the wind. Yikes!

#RhodeScholar Mallory is ready!

Yesterday we completed our final really long run of marathon training!  We did 20.5 miles on the East Bay Bike Path and it was a beautiful run.  We kept ourselves occupied by talking about various topics along the way.  One thing we’ve been doing on long runs is talking about a different adventure we’d like to take at each mile.  It’s really fun and we’ve come up with some crazy things.  I felt pretty good afterwards and am looking forward to FINISHING the marathon.  We watched the video of the Amica Marathon over the weekend and cannot wait to see how beautiful the course is.

#RhodeScholar Michelle enjoys an “awesome” weekend!

I love when so many exciting things happen that I don’t even know where to begin.

The short version -

- Went to “Another Mother Runner” house party last week and had a blast

- Ran the Zooma half-marathon on Cape Cod, and shaved THREE minutes off my PR

- Won 1st place in my age group, and came in 6th overall

- Enjoyed a lovely, kid-free weekend on the Cape with a friend

- Met (and had dinner with) several awesome mother runners from theRLAM Facebook page

- Spent time (at last week’s house party, and at this weekend’s race) with two of my running idols

- Got my official Boston 2013 acceptance email

#RhodeScholar Michelle feels strong

After my bizarre, out-of-the-blue allergic reaction Saturday night, I was really hoping to have a great run Sunday morning - one of the ones where I felt healthy and fit and strong the whole time. I needed that validation.

#RhodeScholar Brittany can breath!

For most of my life, my asthma hasn’t really impacted my every day life. I wasn’t even diagnosed until I was 17 and at the time it felt like a validation for not putting in any effort in gym class. I finally had a viable reason for every gym teacher who told me I just wasn’t trying hard enough or the overly competitive boy who would yell if they didn’t feel like I was really trying in kick-ball. Come on. It’s kick-ball. It’s really not that serious, I promise.

#RhodeScholar Brittany takes advantage of the morning #running weather

Two workouts in a row I’ve managed to pull myself out of bed an hour early to get my miles in before work. I wouldn’t call it a habit, but today was certainly easier than Tuesday. I woke up and felt the crisp breeze through my window and I was down right gitty. It’s Fall! I changed, laced up and hopped in the car. The thermometer in the Sentra even confirmed it was destined to be a perfect running morning.

#RhodeScholar Mallory takes it long!

Tonight I did my longest run to date… 15 miles!  It was an exciting experience and I am so happy to have done it.  The first 5 or so miles, Wendy ran with me before she went to teach yoga.  The rest of the time, I was on my own.  I did pretty well mentally and felt strong in that sense, which has always seemed to be my biggest struggle.  Miles 11-14, I was in a cemetary that I run in often and it started getting very dark and isn’t lit so I was scared!  I was happy to get out of there.  Anyway, I am so happy to have hit this point.

#RhodeScholar Brittany experiences a tough week

I am a pretty healthy person in general. I eat salads more than pizza, drink my recommended 64oz of water each day, take the stairs whenever possible and even sneak in a long run once in a while. Sometimes I even get 8 hours of sleep. This week, none of those things happened. In fact, if I were to have a physical today I’m pretty sure there would be multiple causes for concern.

#RhodeScholar Mallory becomes a #triathlete!

This morning I ran my first ever triathlon.  It was a sprint and I had no idea what to expect.  My goal was to come in under two hours… and not die.  We stayed at a hotel near the race site and you already saw the cool goodies we got!  I woke up before my alarm this morning and had no problem getting up.  I knew it was going to be a good day!  We arrived at the start plenty early and were able to set up our transition areas easily.

#RhodeScholar Mallory experiences technical difficulties

I am still without my own computer but will have one later this week, so please pardon my lack of posting.  I have been running… a little… but have had trouble staying motivated.  I think that I have just gotten it so fixed in my head that I can’t do a marathon as I’ve planned twice to do them but due to life events, didn’t.  It’s a very scary and overwhelming thing.
